US secretary of Homeland Security
The United States Secretary of Homeland Security is the head of the Department of Homeland Security.1 This body is concerned with protecting America and the safety of American citizens.1 This position was created following the 9/11 terrorists attacks in 2001.1
The first Secretary of Homeland Security was Tom Ridge, under George W. Bush, the next was James M. Loy, and the most recent former Secretary of Homeland Security was Michael Chertoff.1 President Barack Obama nominated Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano on December 1, 2008.1 She was confirmed by the Senate on January 20, 2008, and is the current US Secretary of Homeland Security.1
The position of Homeland Security is eighteenth in line for the presidential succession.
