The United States Secretary of Labor is the head of the Department of Labor.1 They exercise control over the department and enforce and suggest laws involving unions.1 Before, there was a Secretary of Commerce and Labor, which united the Department of Commerce and the Department of Labor.1 Now they are separate.1 Six women have served as the Secretary of Labor, which is more than any other cabinet.
President Barack Obama nominated Hilda Solis for the position of Secretary of Labor on December 19, 2008, however, Senate denied the nomination and Elaine Chao kept the job.1 She also served under George W. Bush.1 The First US Secretary of Labor was William B. Wilson, under Woodrow Wilson.
