US Secretary of Education
The United States Secretary of Education is the head of the Department of Education. The Department of Education was established by Jimmy Carter in 1979. Before that, education was handled by the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare also known as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The US Secretary of Education is sixteenth in the line of presidential succession. The former US Secretary of state was Margaret Spellings. President Barack Obama nominated Arne Duncan to be his new Secretary of Education, and he is the current, however, she was denied and Margaret Spellings kept the position. The first was Shirley Hufstedler, who was nominated by Jimmy Carter in 1979.
