The United States Attorney General is the head of the United States Department of Justice and the job is concerned with legal affairs.1 The US Attorney General is the chief lawyer of the US government.1 The first US Attorney General was Edmund Randolph under George Washington.1 His term was from September 26, 1794, to January 26, 1794.
It is the job of the Attorney General to challenge the constitutionality of legislative and administrative actions and enforce antitrust prohibition against monopolistic enterprises.1 They also handle criminal appeals and criminal prosecutions in the state as well as enforce laws on air and water pollution and hazardous waste.1 The Attorney General also prosecutes those who indulge in cases of consumer fraud and antitrust violations.
The most recent former US attorney General is Michael Mukasey under George W. Bush.1 On December 1, 2008, Barack Obama announced Eric Holder as his nominee for the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, however, his nomination was denied by the Senate and Michael Mukasey kept the position.The US Attorney General is seventh in line for the presidential succession.
